Attendance HERO

Thursday, September 20th, has been designated state-wide as “High Attendance Day” for Kentucky schools.  This day highlights the importance of regular school attendance and the correlation between attendance and student performance.  Students who attend class regularly are more likely to keep up with their daily lessons, assignments, and academic achievement. 

Awards will be distributed statewide based on each individual school’s attendance percentage.  The school in each category (elementary, middle and high) with highest percentage attendance for that day will be awarded $500!

Let’s strive for 100% attendance on Thursday, September 20th and everyday!

Fall Break Fall Break

There will not be any school on October 18th and 19th due to Fall Break.  Enjoy your days off from school.  

Accelerated Reading Olympics Accelerated Reading Olympics

The Accelerated Reading Olympics will begin on February 1st and end on February 23rd.  The three students in each classroom in grades 1-5 that have the most Accelerated Reading Points with an 85% average will win a medal.  Good luck and let the games begin!!

School Spirit Week will begin on Monday, October 5th and will end on Friday, October 9th.  A list of spirit days is below:

This fun filled week will end with Meet The Eagles on Friday night.  Show your support for our Eagles by participating in Spirit Week. 

Change For Change

September 21-24 will be a Cent-Sational Week at Johnson Elementary.  Students at Johnson, Bush and Camp Ground, are raising money to help build a second bathroom for a school in Africa.  The cost for the bathroom will be $3,150.  Our goal is to raise $1,050 to help our neighbors in Africa.  We will be taking up change each day.  Any change that you can donate will be appreciated. A list is below:

Governor's Cup

Johnson Elementary will host the District Governor's Cup for Colony, Hazel Green, East Bernstadt and Johnson.  Future Problem Solving and Written Composition will be held on Thursday, February 26 at 6:00 P.M.  Quick Recall and Written Assessment will be on Saturday, February 28.  Testing will begin at 8:30 A.M.

The KPREP testing will begin on Tuesday, May 15 and will end on Monday, May 21.

Third Grade Spelling Bee Winners
Congratulations to Emma Puckett and Clay Morris for being the winners of the Third Grade Spelling Bee!  Emma was winner and Clay was first runner up.

Appalachian Day

We will be having an Appalachian Day on Friday, October 4th at 12:30 P.M.  The demonstrations that will be available to our students are: Bluegrass band, quilt making, lard making, butter making, can foods, corn shuck dolls, storytelling, dulcimer making, folk dancing, wood carving and square dancing.

High Attendance Day Perfect Attendance

Wednesday, September 20th will be high attendance day across Kentucky.  Please make an extra effort to send your child to school on this day.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., there will not be any school on Monday, January 16th, 2017.

High Attendance Day

High Attendance Day is scheduled for Tuesday, September 20.  This will be a State Wide Project for all schools in Kentucky!   Johnson Elementary will be celebrating by having a Pajama Day in which we will be showing a movie and serving popcorn.  

Election Day Election Day

Tuesday, May 22nd is Election Day.  There will not be any school.  Enjoy your day and GO VOTE.   

Eagle Basketball

Congratulations to our Eagle Girls and Boys Basketball Teams.  Both teams were runners up in the tournament.  

School Spelling Bee

The school Spelling Bee will be held on Thursday, January 22 at 1:30 P.M.  The following students will be competing: Draven Fulller, Ody Bautista, Callie Wagers, Madison Proffitt, Jayda Brock, Harlie Dean, Tiffanie Lorman, Alexis Thomas, Hudson Hubbard and Joshua Gray.  The winner and runner up will represent Johnson Elementary at the Laurel County Spelling Bee on February 12 at South Laurel Middle School at 6:00 P.M.  You are invited to attend.

Summer Reading Summer Reading 2017

You are invited to bring your child to Summer Reading on June 12, June 18, June 26, June 28.  Reading will be from 9:00 A.M. - 11:30 A.M.  Students entering first grade must have a parent present with them.  Accelerated Reading points earned during Summer Reading will count toward the 2018-2019 school year.

We will be having a store this summer.  You will receive one book buck for each AR point earned.  Book bucks will be used to purchase items from our store on June 28.  This activity is sponsored by the Johnson Elementary Family Resource Center.

Seussical The Musical

Students in third grade will be performing Seussical The Musical on March 5th  at 1:30 P. M.   All parents of third grade students are invited to attend.

Arts First Aid Grant Kentucky Arts Council

Johnson Elementary has been awarded $5,500 for the Arts First Aid Grant from the Kentucky Arts Council!  The money from this grant will be used to provide administrators, teachers and students with quality, intensive arts education experiences for the 2018-2019 school year.  We are excited to be able to have artists from across the state to come to Johnson Elementary to provide hands on experiences with our students during the upcoming school year.  You can find out more information about the Kentucky Arts Council by visiting their website at www.artscouncil.ky.gov.


Johnson Elementary PTO is hosting a Spring Yard Sale for the community.  Individual spaces are available for rent.  A 12 x12 parking spot is $25 and a 24 x 12 parking spot is $40.  You will need to pre-register and submit payment for spaces by May 6, 2016.  Please bring your own tables/chairs, food and drinks for this event.  You can call Johnson Elementary at 862-4664 for more information.

A Charlie Brown Christmas

You are invited to attend the Charlie Brown Christmas Play presented by our fifth grade students on Tuesday, December 16th at 6:00 P.M.  The North Laurel Chamber Choir will be performing after the play.  The cost for admission will be $1.  Our Core Ambassador Club will be selling desserts and drinks afterward.  All proceeds will be donated to the Eric Johnson and Casey Collett Families.

Parent Teacher Conference will be on Tuesday, October 6, 2015 from 4:00 P.M.  - 7:00 P.M. and Family Reading will be from 4:00 P.M. - 6:30 P.M.  You are invited to attend both events. 

PTO Snowball Sock Hop

Our PTO Sock Hop will be on Friday, December 11th from 3:30 P.M. - 5:30 P.M. The cost is $5 per child and will include one pop and one popcorn.  Pizza, candy, pop and popcorn will be sold for $1 per item.

Accelerated Reading Award Ceremony

You are invited to attend the Accelerated Reading Award Ceremony on Tuesday, May 14 at 9:00 A.M. for students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade and 1:00 P.M. for students in Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade.  Only those students that have met their AR goal each nine weeks will receive an award.

Elementary Cheer tryouts will begin on September 10th and will end on September 14th.  Students in grades 4-5 are allowed to participate.  

Memorial Day Memorial Day

There will no school on Monday, May 28th in observance of Memorial Day.  

Pennies For Patients Pennies

Students at Johnson Elementary will be collecting pennies for patients that have Lymphoma and Leukemia on February 13th - February 22nd. If our school collects $500, the class that collects the most pennies will win a pizza party.  

Johnson Elementary Has Been Named A National Blue Ribbon School Johnson Eagles

We are honored to announce that Johnson Elementary was named a 2016 National Blue Ribbon School!  This award was given away in Washington, D.C. in November. Congratulations to the Johnson Elementary staff and students on a job well done!

Parents, Grandparents and Guardians are invited to eat breakfast with their child during the week of October 2nd.  The schedule is below:

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever

Members of the Johnson Elementary Eagle Book Club will be presenting The Best Christmas Pageant Ever on Monday, December 14th at 6:00 P.M. There will be a $1.00 admission fee.  Johnson's Core Ambassador Club will be selling drinks and desserts afterward.  All proceeds will be donated to a community service organization.

Distinguished and Proficient Awards
Students that scored Distinguished and Proficient on the 2012-2013 K-PREP test will be recognized on Tuesday, November 26.  Students in 6th grade will recieve their awards at 9:30 A.M. and students in grades 4th and 5th will receive their awards at 12:30 P.M. You are invited to attend.
Johnson Elementary Fall Festival and Basket Auction Dinner and Basket Auction

Join us for a night of fun on Friday, November 2nd beginning at 5:30 P.M. as we will be having our annual Fall Festival and basket auction.  We will have hot dogs, chili, nachos and cheese, cotton candy, Slush Puppies, Dippin Dots and candy apples that will be availible to purchase.  The event will include: carnival games, haunted library, nail painting, face painting, obstacle course, haunted storytelling, and a cake walk.  This is an event that the whole family can enjoy. Tickets will be on sale at the door for $1 each or 25 tickets for $20. Feel free to browse around and look at our baskets that will be available to purchase starting at 7:00 P.M.

The Johnson Elementary PTO will be having a fundraiser at Buffalo Wings and Rings on Monday, December 4, 2017.  On this date, a percentage of all food orders will go to help support the students at Johnson Elementary.  Please show your support for our school and eat with us at Buffalo Wings and Rings on December 4th from 5:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. 

Presidents' Day Presidents' Day

There will not be any school on Monday, February 19th in honor of Presidents' Day.

Pancakes at the North Pole Santa

Please be our guest at the North Pole and enjoy homemade pancakes straight from Mrs. Claus' Kitchen.  You will enjoy a variety of toppings from the Elves Sweet Shop and syrup from the Sugary Maple Forest! Sweet, creamy hot chocolate will be served, as well as delicious white milk straight from Santa's North Pole Dairy!  While you enjoy your visit be sure to have your picture made with Santa to remember your visit to the Great North Pole!  This event will take place on Saturday, December 3rd from 9:00 A.M. - 11:30 A.M.  The cost is $5.00 for pancakes and a drink.  A picture with Santa will cost $5.00.

Amateur Paint Night

You are invited to bring your child and attend the first annual Amateur Paint Night on Tuesday, December 15th at 5:30 P.M.  Each child must have an adult present to be allowed to participate.  Each participant will need a 14x18 or 16x20 canvas. You can purchase them from Wal-Mart for $7.99 for two.  All other materials will be provided.  You can help speed up the drying process by bringing an old hairdryer.  The maximum number allowed is 20, so spots are limited.  Hurry and get your form turned in to Mrs. Riley or Mrs. Hughes to make sure you will be included.   


The Johnson Elementary Site Based Decision Making Council meets every second Thursday of each month at 4:00 P.M. 

Perfect Attendance

High Attendance Day is on Thursday, September 18th.  Please make sure that your child attends school and they are on time.  Prizes will be given away if we have 100% attendance.

Family Reading Night and Meet The Eagles Meet the Eagles

You are invited to attend our Family Reading Night and Meet The EAGLE cheerleaders and ball teams on Thursday, October 4th.  Family Reading will be from 4:00 P.M. - 6:00 P.M. and the introduction of the EAGLES will begin at 6:00 P.M.  We will also be showcasing our local author and assistant Chasity Williams with her new book, The Kindergarten Assistant.  Ms. Williams will be reading her new book to students and will have books available for you to purchase.  Our PTO will be having a concession stand. Our PTO Cookie Dough Fundraiser will begin on February 4th.  


The K-Prep Award Ceremony will be on Tuesday, November 25th  beginning at 9:30 A.M. for sixth grade students that are former Johnson students and 12:30 P.M. for Johnson students that are in fourth and fifth grade.

Parent Teacher Conference

Parent Teacher Conference will be held on Tuesday, March 24, from 3:30 P.M. - 7:30 P.M.  Please come and find out about your child's progress.

Celebration of Imagination

Johnson Elementary is happy to bring back a long time tradition of, "Celebration of Imagination."  As a way of sharing your favorite book character, and helping others become interested in reading more, students are incouraged to dress up as their favorite book character on Friday, October 28th.

Here are the guidelines that must be followed:
You must come to school dressed as your favorite character.
You may not have a mask or toy weapon.
You must bring a book that goes along with the character you have chosen.
You will tell your class a short summary of the book and why you chose this character.

Archery Team Practice

The Johnson Archery Team will practice on Wednesday, February 17th from 3:30 P.M. - 5:00 P.M.

You are invited to stop by and shop at our Book Fair on Monday, October 8th through Friday, October 12th.  You can shop with your child every morning from 7:40 A.M. - 8:15 A.M.  as well as during Breakfast With Parents and Grandparents. We will also be having a Family Event on Friday, October 5th  at 3:40 P.M.  If you attend the Family Event, your child will have his/her name entered in a drawing for $100 worth of free books and other prizes.

Fall School Pictures Make Up Day

School make up pictures will be taken on Wednesday, December 2nd.

You are invited to eat lunch with your child during the week of March 16-20. The scheduled times are as follows:
Monday, March 16---Kindergarten at 10:45 A.M.
Tuesday, March 17---Preschool at 11:10 A.M. and First Grade at 11:50 A.M.

Science Fair

The annual Johnson Elementary Science Fair will be held on Friday, March 25th.  This competition is for students in the 3rd, 4th and 5th grades.

Book Fair

Our book fair will begin on October 2nd and will end on October 9th.  You are invited to stop by and shop with your child.

Family Movie Night Family Movie Night

You are invited to a Family Movie Night at North Laurel High School on Tuesday, April 11th.  The doors will open at 5:00 P.M. for community partners to share information about events, health, wellness, safety and local opportunities.  The movie will begin at 6:00 P.M.

Spelling Bee Champions

Congratulations to John Phillip Begley and Ethan Gray.  John Philip is our Spelling Bee Champion and Ethan is our Runner-up.  Both students will be participating in the Laurel County Spelling Bee on February 11th at South Laurel Middle School.  Good luck to both boys!
