Health Science Program of Study

 

Clinical Science Lab: Provides students with training in scientific research, forensic investigation, medical interventions, and clinical laboratory skills.  Students will learn how to collect and analyze various biological and non-biological specimens.  Students will learn how to evaluate data and develop inferences based upon scientific reasoning.  Students will utilize state of the art technology with the Anatomage Table that is a virtual cadaver system for medical investigations and autopsies and 3D printer technology for organ systems manufacturing.  Students will learn and utilize APA research writing and presentation skills.  Students will learn the fundamental skills to function in the role of a clinical lab scientist. 

Career Pathways and Professional Certifications

Biomedical Science (BMS) - Qualified graduates can become eligible to sit for the     Certified EKG Technician (CET) credential, National HealthCareer Association (NHA)

Biomedical Science (BMS) - Qualified graduates can become eligible to sit for the    Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) credential, National HealthCareer Association (NHA)

College Pathway Matriculation

Students who successfully complete the prescribed PLTW courses in the BMS career pathway are eligible to earn up to 12 college credits through an established matriculation agreement with University of the Cumberlands. The program provides a high quality and rigorous clinical lab science training regimen that is designed to prepare students for baccalaureate degrees in Biology, Chemistry, Biomedical Science, Forensics, and pre-professional programs in medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, psychology, veterinary sciences, etc.

 

 

Nursing Services Lab:  Provides a simulated clinical setting with three fully equipped mechanized hospital beds.  Students will learn how to provide ambulatory support, patient care, and utilize medical devices. Students will learn the safe use and operation of a wheelchair, mobility stabilization, and crutch systems.  Students will learn to provide personal care services as well as administer first aid and CPR.  Students will learn how to collect patient vital signs as well as develop an understanding of patient diagnostics and treatment planning.  Students will develop their knowledge, skills, and abilities in the areas of EKG, phlebotomy, electronic medical records, and pharmacy medications. Students will also learn advanced technology systems in the practice of healthcare training with the utilization of the simulated (SIM) mannequin, the Anatomage Table that is a virtual cadaver system for medical investigations and autopsies, and 3D printer technology for organ systems manufacturing. Students will learn the fundamental skills to function professionally in the role of a Nurse Assistant and Medical Office Assistant.  

Career Pathways and Professional Certifications

Medicaid Nurse Aide (MNA) – Qualified graduates can become eligible to sit for the State Registered Nurse Aide (SRNA) credential commonly referred to as the CNA. State of Kentucky.

*Medical Administrative Assistant (MAA) – Qualified graduates can become eligible to sit for the Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) credential, National HealthCareer Association (NHA)

*Phlebotomy Technician (PHB) – Qualified graduates can become eligible to sit for the Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) credential, National HealthCareer Association (NHA)

*Patient Care Technician (PCT) - Qualified graduates can become eligible to sit for the Certified Patient Care Technician (CPCT) credential, National HealthCareer Association (NHA)

*Pharmacy Technician (PHT) – Qualified graduates can become eligible to sit for the Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) credential, National HealthCareer Association (NHA)

*Approved training partnership with the National HealthCareer Association (NHA). Qualified students may elect to pursue supplemental training and earn certifications through the NHA.

College Pathway Matriculation

Students who successfully complete the prescribed MNA courses in the program of study at the CFI, earn grades of B or better, and meet Nursing Program admissions guidelines at Union College have guaranteed acceptance into the Bachelor of Science (BSN-RN) program.

 

Medical Services Lab: Provides a simulated clinical setting to practice the delivery of emergency medical services.  Students will learn ambulatory support, patient care, and utilize medical devices.  Students will learn the safe use and operation of a wheelchair and mobility stabilization equipment such as backboards and mobile patient transport systems.  Students will learn to administer first aid and CPR.  Students will learn how to collect patient vital signs as well as develop an understanding of patient diagnostics and treatment planning.  Students will develop their knowledge, skills, and abilities in the areas of EKG, phlebotomy, electronic medical records, and pharmacy medications.  Students will also learn advanced technology systems in the practice of healthcare training with the utilization of the simulated (SIM) mannequin, the Anatomage Table that is a virtual cadaver system for medical investigations and autopsies, and 3D printer technology for organ systems manufacturing. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) – Qualified graduates can become eligible to sit for the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) credential, Kentucky Board of Emergency Medical Services (KBEMS). Currently pursuing TEI Level II program accreditation.

*Patient Care Technician (PCT) - Qualified graduates can become eligible to sit for the Certified Patient Care Technician (CPCT) credential, National HealthCareer Association (NHA)

*EKG Technician (EKG) – Qualified graduates can become eligible to sit for the Certified EKG Technician (CET) credential, National HealthCareer Association (NHA)

College Pathway Matriculation

Students who successfully complete the prescribed EMT courses in the program of study at the CFI, earn grades of B or better, and who successfully pass the EMT certification standards set by the KBEMS may qualify for college credit or have specific college coursework waived at Eastern Kentucky University and be accepted into the Emergency Medical Care (Paramedic Science) program.

Engineering Technology Program of Study

 

Engineering Lab: Provides students with the technical training needed to become proficient in the use of computer-assisted drafting (CAD), the use of 3D print technology, and VEX robotics systems.  Students will learn the utilization of technology in design thinking, model fabrication, and project development.  Students will learn how to design, create, and demonstrate robotic operations through the utilization of computer science programming of the robots.  Students will learn about the diverse career pathways in professional engineering. Our program will have an emphasis in Aerospace Engineering and Electrical Engineering.

Robotics Lab: Students will learn how to design, fabricate, assemble, program, deploy, and operate VEX robots and other robotic systems as well as produce an original design unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) or drone.

Aerospace Engineering – Qualified graduates can become eligible to sit for the    AutoDesk Certified User (CAD) credential - Autodesk

Electrical Engineering (PLTW/CTE) – Qualified graduates can become eligible to sit for the      AutoDesk Certified User (CAD) - AutoDesk

Electrical Engineering (PLTW/CTE) – Qualified graduates can become eligible to sit for the Electrical Technician, National Center for Construction Education & Research (NCCER).

College Pathway Matriculation

Students who successfully complete the prescribed courses and meet eligibility requirements may earn up to 12 college credits that can be applied toward their baccalaureate degree at University of the Cumberlands or up to 16 college credits with Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College to be applied toward the Associate in Applied Science Degree.

 

Industrial Maintenance Technology Program of Study

 

Electrical Lab: Provides students with the training necessary to become proficient with the safe usage of electrical fabrication systems.  Students will learn to design, fabricate, and operate residential and commercial electrical circuits.  

Welding Lab: Students will demonstrate their ability to safely operate and fabricate metal components with the utilization of Mig, Tig, and Stik welding processes.

Construction Lab: Provides students with the training needed for to understand and create residential structures to include framing, doors, windows, interior and exterior housing fabrication. Integrates masonry, air conditioning (HVAC) and plumbing technology skills development.

Motor Controls Lab: Students will learn and demonstrate the use and utility of motor control systems utilized in advanced manufacturing and automated industrial settings. Integrates robotics, hydraulics, and pneumatic skills development.

Mechatronics Lab Students will develop their computer science skills with the practice of programmable logic controls (PLCs).  Students will learn to design, monitor, and operate PLC’s which are utilized in advanced manufacturing plants.

Electrical Engineering (PLTW/CTE) – Qualified graduates can become eligible to sit for the AutoDesk Certified User (CAD) credential- AutoDesk

Electrical Technician (CTE) - Qualified graduates can become eligible to sit for the    Electrical Technician credential, National Center for Construction Education & Research (NCCER)

College Pathway Matriculation

Students who successfully complete the prescribed courses and meet eligibility requirements may earn up to 22 college credits that can be applies toward the Associate in Applied Science degree with Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College.

Media Arts Technology Program of Study

 

Television Studio Lab: Students will learn to setup, operate, and manage studio operations.  They will develop proficiency with creative design processes, camera operations, and video production. Students will learn how to develop and produce television quality programs.

Graphic Design Lab: Students will learn how to design, layout, and create graphic representations with print, video, and web page media.  Students will utilize multiple software programs such as Adobe, Microsoft, Apple, and Cloud-based products.

Cinematography and Videography – Qualified graduates can become eligible to sit for the Adobe Certification

Graphic Design – Qualified graduates can become eligible to sit for the    Adobe Certification

College Pathway Matriculation

Students who successfully complete the prescribed courses and meet eligibility requirements may earn up to 12 college credits and may elect to participate in other dual credit courses to earn an additional 6 college credit hours that can be applied toward the Associate in Applied Science degree with Hazard Community & Technical College.
