FEBRUARY IS CTE MONTH

February is Career & Technical Education (CTE) month in America.  We take this opportunity to especially celebrate CTE month in 2017 as it is marks the 100th anniversary of the Smith-Hughes Act which was passed into legislation in 1917.  The Smith-Hughes National Vocational Education Act of 1917 was an act of the United States Congress that promoted vocational and technical education programs to train students and provided funds for this purpose to schools around the country.

The Laurel County Public School district offers students a diverse array of CTE programs of study to include Agriculture Education, Allied Health Science, Biomedical Science , Business Education, Engineering Technology, Family Consumer Science, Industrial Technology, Junior Reserve Officer Training Corp, Marketing Education and Media Arts Technology that are designed to help students meet college and career readiness standards. “These educational opportunities help our students develop the necessary skills and experience to be successful in an increasingly competitive work force,” remarked Laurel County Public School Superintendent, Dr. Doug Bennett.

The programs of study offer specific career pathway courses that are designed to utilize both academic knowledge and technical skills to prepare students for industry certifications which enable students to be more employable upon high school graduation.  Additionally, "a number of our CTE programs have courses that upon successful completion students can be awarded college credit", remarked Dr. James M. Davis, CFI Principal.

For more information about the Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs offered in the Laurel County Schools you may speak with the high school counselors or request from them a referral to the respective program faculty.
