Laurel County Schools, like many other schools across the Commonwealth, have been subjected to copy-cat threats echoing across our nation. Laurel County School district employees and administrators are working cooperatively with state and local authorities as they investigate reported threats. The student suspects in each of these cases have been arrested and are facing prosecution. Confidentiality laws prevent our school system from talking about persons involved or the specifics of each incidence. However, in each case, a thorough investigation was conducted by local authorities and extra security measures are in place including increased law enforcement presence from state and local agencies. Laurel County Schools will continue to be diligent, alert, follow safety protocols, procedures, and work with law enforcement.
Students often times say and do things in play or as pranks not realizing the impact of their actions. We encourage you as parents/guardians to talk with your children about the importance and accountability regarding this type of behavior.
All threats are taken seriously and have consequences. Those who make these types of threats will continue to be arrested and could face felony charges. Students making threats will also be candidates for expulsion.
Also, be mindful of social media, most threats are being made via social media. Students’ actions can have consequences that will affect them for the rest of their lives.
Let us all continue to be diligent, proactive and wise as we work together to keep our students and schools safe.
