Ninth grade is the portal into young adulthood. The entrance into high school means that Advanced Placement and other advanced courses and college are just a few miles down the road. The freshman year of high school encompasses a period of increased mental growth. Ninth graders are entering a critical intellectual phase of their lives, a time of moving from understanding and applying to analyzing, evaluating, and creating--the higher levels of thinking. In two years, they will encouter their first college course in the high school setting and they must deepen the kinds of thinking those courses demand.
In ninth grade, students begin to assume more responsibility for their reading and writing, realizing that more time must be spent at home learning concepts deeply and widely. It is during this year, that students who have relied on their listening or memorizing skills must work harder to master new concepts. As their teacher, I will offer many new concepts and reinforce those study skills that stand the student in good stead for a lifetime.
