App Store

PBS for iPad

  • Why you want this?  They have an amazing number of full length episodes from many of their shows.  Of course I think you should watch the science shows NOVA and Nature but there's something here for every taste.

Virtual Cell Animations

  • Fantastic animations of cellular and molecular processes.  Mitosis, ATP Synthase, mRNA processing, Photosystem II and more.

Plant Histology Lite

  •  Study mitosis then quiz yourself.  Very nice pictures of mitosis in onion root tips.

HHMI Bulletin

  • Science magazine published quarterly by Howard Hughes Medical Institute.  Learn about the work of scientists supported by HHMI.  What keeps me reading is the story-telling style of writing and the graphic design.  It's also available in print and you can download back issues.

Click and Learn

  • Also from HHMI.  Explore Biology with this interactive app geared to high school biology students.  Great place for a curious mind!

Gene Screen

  • Includes four animations introducing the concepts of genetics and inheritance, population genetics, recessive genetic diseases, and genetic screening. There are Punnett Square inheritance calculators to work out patterns of recessive inheritance and a prevalence calculator to highlight the different carrier frequencies of 19 genetic diseases in Jewish populations versus the general population. An interactive ancestry map highlights some genetic diseases that are more prevalent in certain regions of the world.

Creatures of Light - companion app for exhibit at the America Museum of Natural History

  • Stunning images, interactive animations, videos, and a symphonic soundtrack....what more could you ask?  A fantastic introduction to bioluminescence.

Biology Flashcards for Principles of Life, a college textbook

  • Great way to learn or review vocabulary.
