SIXTH GRADE SCIENCE SYLLABUS

 

 

Dear Students and Families,

Welcome to South Laurel Middle School!  I’m excited about the opportunity to get to know you, and I looking forward to a happy and productive school year with each student putting forth their best effort. Below is a list of the course requirements, policies and procedures. Please take time to review the class syllabus and sign, date and return the attached lower sheet.

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

Students will build a solid foundation of knowledge, skills, and strategies that will be refined, applied, and extended as students engage in more complex ideas, texts, and tasks. Students will be introduced to various areas of science: Physical Science, Interdependent Relationships in Ecosystems, Earth Systems, Space Systems.

 

Course Objectives:

  1. Space Systems 
  2. History of the Earth
  3. Earth’s Systems
  4. Matter and Energy in Organisms and Ecosystems
  5. Interdependent Relationships in Ecosystems
  6. Structure and Properties of Matter
  7. Forces and Interactions

 

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

General Rules:

Student are expected to:

  • Be prepared for class
  • Complete assignments by due date
  • Respect classmates and South Middle staff
  • Follow student handbook rules
  • Not use Cell Phones in class- If they are seen or used they will be taken.
  • Progressive Discipline will be used, including the following, but not limited to:

Verbal Warning

Parent Contact

Time out of class or an activity

In school suspension or after school detention

Parent/administrator/ teacher conference

 

 

Grading Policies:

Homework: Each student is responsible for turning his or her work in on time. If the homework is late the assignment will be deducted 10 points per day. If the assignment is not turned in a week after the due date, then the assignment automatically becomes a zero.

 

Note Taking: In Science class, students are responsible for taking notes during class lecture. These notes will help the student prepare for tests or quizzes. Any accommodations in students IEP’s will be met.

 

Tests and Quizzes: Tests and quizzes are given on a regular basis and points vary according to the content covered.

 

Make up Work: Missing work is the student’s responsibility. Students must come to teacher for any assignments missed or not turned in.

 

Grading Scale:

A-90-100

B-80-89

C-70-79

D-60-69

F-50 and
