Students will:

  • distinguish between complete sentences and sentence fragments
  • correct sentence fragments
  • identify statements and questions
  • identify commands and exclamations
  • identify the subject of a sentence
  • identify the predicate of a sentence
  • correct run-on sentences by using capital letters and appropriate end marks   
  • correct run-on sentences by creating compound sentences
  • generate sentences by combining words                                                                                   

 

                                                                            Unit 2

 

                            Nouns

 

Learning Targets/Objectives:

Students will:

  • identify nouns and write sentences and identify nouns in them
  • distinguish between common and proper nouns
  • identify the subject of a sentence and identify the noun in the subject
  • expand sentences by adding appositives
  • distinguish between singular and plural nouns and form plural nouns by adding -s
  • form the plural of nouns that end in s, sh, ch, or x.
  • form the plurals of irregular nouns
  • form singular possessive nouns
  • form plural possessive nouns
  • replace vague nouns with exact ones

 

                       Unit 3

 

                       Verbs

 

Learning Targets/Objectives:

Students will:

  • identify verbs
  • identify subjects as singular or plural and choose the correct form of verbs in the present
  • form the present tense of verbs ending in s, sh, ch, and x
  • form the present tense of verbs ending in a consonant and y
  • identify verbs in the past time and form the past of regular verbs
  • form the past of verbs ending in e
  • form the past of verbs ending in a consonant and y and of verbs ending in one vowel followed by one consonant
  • identify verbs in the future and form the future of regular verbs
  • combine sentences by joining predicates
  • identify the present and the past forms of the verb be and choose the correct form of the verb be
  • use has and have as helping verbs
  • use the past form of the irregular verbs go, see, do, run, and come
  • choose the past form of the irregular verbs give, write, eat, take, and grow
  • form contractions using verbs and the word not
  • replace weak verbs with exact ones

              Adjectives and Adverbs

Students will:

  • identify adjectives that tell what kind
  • identify adjectives that tell how many
  • expand sentenes by adding adjectives
  • use a, an, and the correctly
  • use adjectives ending in -er to compare two nouns
  • use adjectives ending in -est to compare more the two nouns
  • identify adverbs that tell how
  • identify adverbs that tell when and where
  • expand sentences by adding adverbs
  • use to, two, and too correctly in sentences
  • replace vague adjectives with precise ones and use a thesarus

 

                      Unit 5

 

      Capitalization and Punctuation

 

Learning Targets/Objectives:

Students will:

  • use correct capitalization and end punctuation when writing sentences
  • write all four types of sentences
  • capitalize a proper noun that names a particular person, pet, day, month, or holiday
  • using capitalization properly when naming a particular place
  • use capitalization for each important word in a proper noun
  • write the abbreviationf for days of the week, months of the year, and people's titles
  • write book titles correctly
  • recognize where commas belong in a series
  • combine ssentences to make a series
  • use quotation marks with direct quotations
  • correctly punctuate and capitalize quotations

 

                     Unit 6

                

                    Prounouns

 

Learning Targets/Objectives:

Students will:

  • identify subject pronouns in a sentenc and use pronouns to replace nouns in a sentence
  • use the correct verb form for the subject pronoun
  • identify the object pronouns me, you, him, her, it, us, and them and use object pronouns to replace nouns
  • learn how to avoid using too many pronouns
  • use the pronouns i and me correctly
  • identify possessive pronouns and choose the correct possessive pronoun to replace a possessive noun
  • identify pronoun-verb contractions
  • choose among there, their, and they're to complete sentences
  • use the homophone that fits the sentence
