7th grade mathematics is a required yearlong course for middle school students. It is the study of the number system, rational and proportional relationships, expressions and equations, geometry, and statistics and probability. Students will use and build upon prior knowledge as well as develop and explore new mathematical concepts.
Classroom Instruction and Group Work:
Students will work in collaborative groups and individually on a regular basis and approach problems conceptually. The only way students will master the concepts is by being actively involved in their learning.
Daily Assignments and Homework:
Assignments will be given daily to practice and master the skills we have learned in class. Homework will be given in math nearly every night. Practice is essential to understanding and becoming proficient in mathematics.
Technology will be used frequently in mathematics for daily assignments, homework, and assessments.
Quizzes will be given frequently in class to determine student understanding of topics previously taught. Tests will be given at the end of each unit. Tests will be cumulative, meaning any content covered previously in math is fair game and likely to be on the test.
The following suggestions will help students be successful and have a positive experience in mathematics.
Encourage and support risk taking on homework and while working in groups.
Talk on a regular basis about the concepts being taught.
Create an atmosphere at home where there is a designated study space and study time.
Offer help with homework and suggest that students get help at school when necessary.
Look through their math notebook on occasion and ask about organizational strategies.
Textbook and Workbook:
Students will be provided with a textbook and a workbook to use during the 2016-2017 school year. It is the student’s responsibility to keep up with and take care of their books. Books should be brought to class with the student each day. Failure to bring book or other required materials to class could result in a zero for the daily grade. Lost or damaged textbooks will be charged to the student.
Students will need the following materials for math:
A 3-ring 2” binder to be used for math ONLY
Pencils/ Loose Leaf Paper
Red pen for grading
Scientific Calculator for homework (a calculator will be provided for student use at school, but they must be left in the classroom)
Requested items (but not required):
Attendance is required in accordance with NLMS’ Policy. (See the NLMS Student Handbook.) A student will not be successful without regular attendance.
