My name is Mrs. Alana Hacker, and I am the English teacher on the Elite team and the team leader (that part is new for me this year). This year marks my 24th year as a reading/language arts teacher here at South Laurel Middle School. During the first two years of my teaching career, we were actually still South Laurel Junior High School. During the last two or three years, I have begun to have students whose parents I had as students a number of years ago. Yes, I have been here for a while. I received my undergraduate degree at Tennessee Technological University and my Master's Degree at Eastern Kentucky University. But most of what I have learned about teaching and dealing with students has happened right here in the classroom. Believe me, some of that stuff they just don't teach in college. One of the biggest things I have learned is that each student is an individual with invidual needs and concerns. I will do my best to address each child's needs and concerns while trying to still teach each child to have responsibiity and show respect for those around him or her. This year will be a dificult year as each student makes the transition from middle school student to high school student. But if we as teachers, students, and parents work together, well, we will be able get through it all just fine.
