Week of August 27th – 31st , 2012
Attendance is crucial for academic success. During these first weeks of school, we have already had several students who have been absent. We understand that sometimes students get too sick to come to school, but please make every effort to have them here when possible. Please make dentist appointments and other “check-ups” for after school hours.

ICE CREAM SOCIAL on October 5th for students who have missed no more than two days in the month of September.

ACCELERATED READER - We expect your child to meet his/her AR goals each month with a total score of 90% or better. August goal is 12 points. YOUR CHILD NEEDS 12  POINTS BY FRIDAY.

Ask your child about the bracelet they received at school. A letter was sent home last week with the details.

Folders come home EVERY MONDAY! Please check folder on Monday night. Review all graded assignments so you will know how your child is doing. Also, please complete and return anything that needs to be sent back to school. FOLDERS AND SIGNED NEWSLETTERS SHOULD BE RETURNED ON FRIDAY!

Don't forget to check your student's planner each night for notes and assignments. Please sign after reviewing the planner each day.

Students have math homework every M-Th. It is in their yellow math folders on the right side. Please make sure they complete and return.

Last week, we had FABULOUS FRIDAY for students who had all their work turned in ON TIME and had 8 AR points. We had a blast with snacks and drinks during some extra recess time. Our next Fabulous Friday will be September 7th. Make sure your child is able to attend by monitoring the homework listed on the newsletter and ensuring 20 minutes of AR reading each night.

Language Arts- This week we will be studying correlative conjunctions, verb tenses, prepositions, and interjections. Please check your child’s planner for their homework assignments.
Social Studies-This week we will be studying the Age of Exploration. Students should be able to tell you why Europeans came to the Americas to explore.

Reading- This week in class we are reading a portion of the novel “Island of Blue Dolphins” in class. Please remember that the spelling sent home on Monday is due by Thursday. I again want to stress that reading A.R. books for 20 minutes each night is a homework assignment. Many students are already falling behind in their goal of 4 points per week. Also, your child’s Spelling test is on Thursday and Reading test is on Friday. Please make sure your child is studying his/her spelling and vocabulary words.

We are still collecting pop tabs and box tops. Please send those to your
child’s homeroom teacher.

Students who want to try out for basketball or cheerleading need a physical turned in
by September 20th. These forms were given out to most students last Friday.
