Students from the Industrial Maintenance program at the Laurel County Schools Center for Innovation (CFI) recently participated in a competition held at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers #369 (IBEW) facility in Louisville. The competition spanned two days, with each day presenting different challenges.
On day one, competitors took a quiz to assess their knowledge of Electrical Theory, Motor Controls Concepts, Troubleshooting, and Circuit Design. The CFI students impressed the judges and electricians of IBEW with their ability to create working diagrams. After the quiz, students had the opportunity to inspect the electrical control cabinets and ask questions about the components.
On day two, students received almost eight hours to wire connections and install components. They began by installing wiring and terminating connections, then labeling all components and conductors, and concluded the day by binding their wires to ensure clean installations.
Throughout the competition, the students were encouraged to prioritize safety, professionalism, and curiosity about the trade. The IBEW staff hosting the competition provided instruction on wiring construction, methodology, troubleshooting, and the many possibilities available to successful IMT students.
The Laurel County Agency for Substance Abuse (ASAP) partnered with the South Laurel High School Youth Service Center to organize a mock prom disaster designed to educate students about the dangers of drinking, drug abuse, and driving. During the event, students witnessed a simulated car accident and a jury trial of a senior who made the poor decision to drink and drive after their prom, resulting in a tragic accident.
A special thank you to Christie Shrader with Laurel County ASAP and all the community agencies, first responders, and local, county, and state law enforcement who generously volunteered their time to make this event a success.

BUS STOP LOCATION CHANGE: Affecting bus 1801 London Elementary, SLHS and SLMS - Due to utility construction that is set to continue 4 - 6 weeks that will involve street closures for the following streets: Johnson Addition, Catching Street, Washington Street, South Dixie Street (From Washington Street to West Dixie Street)
Fire Rescue Drive (Johnson Addition to Carter Drive), Carter Drive, we are moving the stop location for all of these streets to the London Farmers Market morning and afternoon. Please have your students at that location in the mornings to be picked up at approximately 7:15. Students will be dropped off at the Famers Market at approximately 3:35. This new schedule and stop location will begin April 15th, 2024 until school dismisses in May. Thank you for your understanding and patience in this matter.
